Autograph letter signed (when Prime Minister, 'C.R.Attlee') to General Sir Leslie HOLLIS, 10 Downing Street, 7 October 1946, congratulating him on his excellent work in a government paper on defence, one page, 8vo , and a typed letter signed, 27 June 1946; and eleven other typed letters signed addressed to Hollis by correspondents including Herbert Morrison (annotated by an official, 'This is ... the poor little man you're always so rude about', 1946); Admiral Sir John Cunningham; members of the United States delegation to the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II including General Omar BRADLEY (leader of the American invading force in France in 1944), General George Catlett MARSHALL (originator of the Marshall Aid plan for the reconstruction of Europe after World War II), Earl WARREN (Governor of California and Chief Justice of the Supreme Court), and 2 others; and 4 by the Lord Chamberlain's office, all referring to Hollis's service during the Americans' visit to London in 1953); together 13 pages, 8vo and 4to Letters to a distinguished public servant. Sir Leslie Hollis (1897-1963) served under Lord Ismay, Secretary of the Imperial Committee of Defence from 1936, succeeding him in 1946, then becoming deputy military secretary to the Cabinet and in 1949 commandant of the Marines. Clement Attlee was Prime Minister from 1945-1951, in the first Labour government after World War II. (13)
