Property from the Collection of David and Louise CarterAttributed to Bartholomeus MolenaerHaarlem circa 1612 - 1650Peasants drinking and smoking in a tavern oil on panelpanel: 6 1/2 by 10 3/4 in.; 16.5 by 27.3 cm.framed: 17 by 21 1/4 in.; 43.2 by 54 cm.Condition reportThe panel is flat, stable, and beveled on three edges, excluding the top edge. The genre scene reads relatively well beneath a discolored varnish, and a few small discolored retouches are visible to the naked eye in the left background. Under UV inspection, the varnish appears milky and opaque, though a few small retouches from an earlier campaign are visible in the left and center background on the wall. The painting would possibly benefit from a cleaning and fresh varnish. Offered in a simply carved, dark stained wood frame with gilt inner liner, missing the right edge of the inner liner. The lot is sold in the condition it is in at the time of sale. The
