Beschreibung:

Attributed to Jane Peterson (American, 1876-1965) Motif Number 1 / A Rockport Scene Unsigned. Oil on canvas, 18 x 24 in. (45.7 x 61.0 cm), framed. Condition: Craquelure, subtle rippling. Provenance: A private Cape Ann, Massachusets collection. N.B. Peterson visited Cape Ann shortly after World War I, painting street and harbor scenes in the Gloucester area between 1914 and 1919. (1) While Rockport's most famous fishing shack is not a documented subject in Peterson's oeuvre, it would have been a known and accessible landmark to her. Though unsigned, the present work shows some of the qualities in paint handling and treatment of light often ascribed to Peterson. 1) Kristian Davies, Artists of Cape Ann: A 150 Year Tradition. Rockport: Twin Lights Publishers, Inc., 2001, p. 82.
