Attributed to Paul Cadmus (1904-1999)George Platt Lynes and Monroe Wheeler, c. 1940s gelatin silver print, signed and titled in an unknown hand, 'George Platt Lynes (standing) Monroe Wheeler by Paul Cadmus Circa 1940's, PAJAMA' in pencil on the verso. Collection of Paul Cadmus stamp on the verso sheet 6 1/2 x 4 1/2 in. (16 x 11.4 cm.) FootnotesProvenance Paul Cadmus (1904-1999), Weston, Connecticut. R. Vance Martin, Kensington, California. Acquired from the above by the present owner, September 1, 1989. The present work attributed to Paul Cadmus depicts photographer George Platt Lynes (1907-1955) and publisher and curator Monroe Wheeler (1899-1999). Lynes had a love affair with both Wheeler and writer Glenway Wescott (1901-1987), forming a complex triangular relationship beginning in 1927 until Lynes' death in 1955. The inscription 'PaJaMa' refers to the group of outlier artists Paul Cadmus Jared French (1905-1987), and Margaret Hoening French (1889-1973), who formed the name from the first two letters of their first names. The three often produced photographs of themselves and their friends, many of whom were young, beautiful, and gay and were important figures in New York's art, dance, or literary circles in the first half of the 20th century.
