Auguste Bonheur (French, 1824-1884). Oil on canvas titled "Return from the Fields," depicting a grazing herd of cattle under an azure, cloud-studded sky. Signed along the lower left. Provenance: Knoedler & Co., New York; Frederick B. Wells, Minnesota; Collection of an important Minneapolis institution, gifted from the above 1943. Unframed; height: 26 in x width: 39 1/2 in. Framed; height: 40 in x width: 53 1/2 in. Condition Request Condition Report There is craquelure to the painting surface throughout. There is a stretcher bar mark along the top edge of the canvas. There is one small spiral crack visible along the center of the composition. There is soiling to the verso. The canvas has not been relined. There is a restoration that measures approximately 3 in x 3 in to the left edge of the artwork, visible under UV; the patch is visible from the verso. There are a few scattered small areas of retouching visible under UV. Several losses to the frame, which shows some insect damage, visible from the verso.
