De contritione cordis . [Lauingen: Printer of Augustinus, 'De consensu evangelistarum'], 9 November 1472. Chancery half-sheet 4° (208 x 155mm). Collation: [1 8 2 1 0 3-4 8 5-6 6 7-9 8 10 6] (1/1 blank, 1/2r De anima , 2/2v blank, 2/3r De ebrietate , 2/10v blank, 3/1r De vanitatibus saeculi , 3/7r De vita christiana , 6/6v blank, 7/1r De sobrietate , 8/3v De virtutibus caritatis , 9/4r De contritione cordis , 10/5v-6 blank). 76 leaves. 24 lines. Type: 1a:106R. 2- to 4-line initial spaces, manuscript quire catchwords. (Faint dampstain at upper edges, a few small wormholes, one into text.) 19th-century marbled boards (a little minor scuffing, corners a little bumped). Provenance : contemporary annotations -- Sir Thomas Edward Watson, Newport (1851-1921; bookplate; by descent to the present owners). FIRST EDITION OF ALL BUT TWO TEXTS AND THE FIRST BOOK PRINTED AT LAUINGEN. Its Roman type is one of the earliest in Germany and it is unique to this edition. Only two works are known to have been printed at Lauingen in the 15th century, both assigned to one anonymous press. Because both editions are by (or ascribed to) St. Augustine, it has been suggested that the press may have been established or supported by the Augustinian Hermits there (cf. Geldner I, 195; O. Bucher in AGB 8, 1967, p.1467ff.). De ebrietate and De vita christiana had appeared in previous editions. Only one other complete copy -- the Abrams copy -- has appeared at auction in over 25 years. A large copy, preserving many deckle edges. HC *1964; GW 2936; BMC II, 545 (IA. 9501); Goff A-1224.
