AUGUSTINUS, Aurelius (pseudo-). Soliloquia ('Agnoscam te'). Winterberg: Johann Alakraw, 1484.
AUGUSTINUS, Aurelius (pseudo-). Soliloquia ('Agnoscam te'). Winterberg: Johann Alakraw, 1484. Chancery 4° (191 x 142mm). Collation: [1-3 8 4 6 (1/1r text, 4/5r colophon, 4/5v-4/6 blank)]. 29 leaves (of 30, without final blank). 32 lines. Type: B. Mayr 1:94G. 2- and 4-line initial spaces. Formerly in a Sammelband, with contemporary foliation 247-283. (Some marginal worming, a few small marginal tears, small repairs in gutter of last 3 leaves, quires loose in sewing.) 19th-century half pigskin, blue-speckled edges (label removed from upper cover). Provenance : Eric Sexton (bookplate; sale Christie's NY, 8 April 1981, lot 206) -- Ned J. Nakles (1931-99; sale Christie's NY, 17 April 2000, lot 179). ONE OF ONLY THREE BOOKS PRINTED AT WINTERBERG, BOHEMIA, IN THE 15TH CENTURY , the Soliloquia is very probably the first. Johann Alakraw is known to have produced one tract at Passau in 1482 before establishing the first press at Winterberg in 1484 with the same printing material. His surviving printed output consists of three works: the present edition (considered by BMC to take precedence), a work by Albertus Magnus, and a broadside almanac in Czech for 1485. This Winterberg printing is the third Latin edition of the ps-Augustinus. H *2013; BMC III, 814 (IA. 51607); GW 3013; BSB-Ink A-927; Bod-inc A-601; Goff A-1326.
