Four albumen photographs, each approx. 11 x 14 in., three of which are unmounted, and one affixed to 12.25 x 16 in. mount (with scattered spotting). with three albumen photographs mounted on reverse side ranging in size from 5 x 7 in. to 8 x 10.5 in. with inked or penciled captions below three of the images identifying the scenes as "Alphington," "Gover's [sic] Leap," which is actually Govett's Leap, and "Zigzag Railway" in Australia. Photographer unknown: Australia, ca 1870s. A fine group of railroad survey photographs capturing Australia's lush landscapes, including views of bridges, train tracks and rivers. Light toning to prints. Panoramic albumen photograph, 6.5 x 17.125 in., hinged in center, with right portion partially mounted on 9.5 x 12.5 in. album page. View of the port of Iquique, Chile: Photographer unknown: Iquique, Chile, 1898. A fine, sharp view of the harbor and town with mountains in the background. Shacks, people gathered on the beach, and boats in the pier can be seen in the foreground. Warehouses bearing names such as Gibbs & Co., Inglis, Lomax & Co., and more can be seen across the harbor. Iquique was a major harbor port for shipping sodium nitrate, which was mined for gun powder and fertilizer from the deserts of Tarapaca by British entrepreneurs. The region had been wrested by Chile from Peru in the long War of the Pacific. Reverse side of mount includes albumen photograph, 4 x 7.25 in., showing three men in narrow skiff with horned oxen tied to outriggers, paddling up to a large ship. A typed paper label affixed to reverse side of archival mount in which the two photos are housed states that they were collected by Montana cattleman Granville Stuart while he was ambassador to Uruguay in the 1890s, although no further documentation accompanies the photos confirming this provenance. Light wear to panoramic print, including small area of loss in lower right corner of print. Otherwise, very good condition.
