Autograph letter signed ('Charles Dickens') to Peter Le Neve- Foster, photographer and Secretary of the Society of Arts. Dickens writes “I cannot have the honour of being one of the Deputation to present the address to which your private circular refers; inasmuch as I attached my name to it as President of the Chatham and Rochester Institution, in submission to such of its members as had appended their names in the document, and without in the least perceiving (as I informed the Secretary) what on earth we have to do with the marriage of the Princess Royal”, one page, mailing folds, 8vo, Tavistock House, 29 January 1858. Provenance: the descendants of Samuel Davenport who was Financial Officer of the Society of Arts from 1844 to 1876.
