To (Henry Alexander Wise [Governor of Virginia], "I am very sorry to leave Richmond without calling again to pay my respects to you and Mrs. Wise - But I return to Washington in the morning..." Contents and signature clear and strong, signature not affected by creasing. In hand addressed cover. Signed as Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court to the Governor of Virginia. Roger Brooke Taney (1777-1864), Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court (1836-1864), delivered the majority opinion in Dread Scott v. Sandford (1857). Henry Alexander Wise (1806-1876), U. S. Congressional Representative from Virginia, last antebellum Governor of Virginia - signed John Brown's death warrant, Confederate General.
