(6 3/4 x 4 3/8in.), contemporary sheep, spine gilt lettered later, head of spine slightly chipped, new rear endpaper, inscription cut away from upper margin of title, a trifle wormed at front, second plate just cropped at fore-edge, tiny rust hole in I6, hole in 2C5 catching page numerals. FIRST EDITION. Engraved title-pages by William Marshall and 6 engraved plates showing manual rhetorical gestures. Garrison and Morton 3346 and 3347; Wing B-5462 and B-5466. "Bulwer was the first Englishman to write about the teaching of deaf-mutes"--Garrison and Morton. Provenance : Jo.
