Bowyer, 1734. 4, woodcut device on title (lacking portrait, small hole in a3 affecting one letter, occasional light soiling to upper margin), contemporary red morocco, sides with wide dentelle border, fleur-de-lys corner pieces and gilt central lozenge, spine elaborately decorated in gilt (rebacked with old spine relaid, also recornered, rather worn), g.e. FIRST EDITION. Gibson 252. ALTIERI, F. Dizionario Italiano ed Inglese. A Dictionary Italian and English , edited by Evangelist Palermo, London: for William Innys, 1749. 2 volumes, 4, printed in 3 columns, single errata leaf at end of volume I, 2 errata leaves and advertisement at end of volume II (occasional ink stains to text, a few outer margins in vol. I waterstained, rather severe soiling to U3 r of vol. II, hole in L3 of the same vol. affecting several letters on verso, a few gatherings browned), contemporary diced russia, sides with gilt roll-tool border of flowers and birds, gilt panelled spines (restoration to spines and corners, chip to one joint, joints generally tender), marbled endpapers. Provenance : William Mitford of Pitts Hill, bookplate engraved by J. Sherwin, [17]73. Second edition. With 7 other works published in the 18th-century, including a finely-bound quarto edition of Gray's Poems (York, 1775), an extra-illustrated copy of Clarendon's Characters of Eminent Men (London, 1793), and the first edition of Alexander Nisbet's A System of Heraldry (Edinburgh, 1722-42) in modern half calf.
