London: for Iohn Iaggard, 1613 [i.e. J. Beale, c.1617] Small 8° (120 x 80mm.). With final blank. (Minor restoration in margin of title, lacking blank A1.) Red morocco gilt by Bedford, edges gilt. Provenance: Hoar family (bookplate). Bacon's Essays were first published in 1597 and subsequently added to and revised making the Beale 1612 edition virtually a new work. This was followed by several other editions, the main difference being the title spelling of 'Atturney', of which this is the fourth, probably a counterfeit of c.1617. All editions are rare. STC 1143; Pforzheimer 29; Gibson 9.
