Casparus Barlaeus, the poet and professor of philosophy and rhetoric at the University of Amsterdam, was entrusted with the task of transmitting this important event in literary form to posterity. Hooft, his famous contemporary, praised him as the 'Prince of Poets' who 'poured brave verses gently out of his sleeve'" (Otto Benesch, Artistic and Intellectual Trends from Rubens to Daumier , p.36). Landwehr, Splendid Ceremonies 109; Müller 1793.
