Barnum, Phineas Taylor, showman (1810-1891). ANS, 1p, approx. 5 x 8", Bridgeport, CT, 1 Aug. 1881. Written on Barnum portrait stationery. Addressed to Frederick Gutekunst (1831-1917), famed Philadelphia photographer. My Dear Gutekunst, I find this sheet among my papers. I don't know who printed it. If you print such photographs - or any kind on note paper, at a price that would bring it within a proper limit for use as business note paper, I would like to know it. The last picture (Phototype) which you took of me I carried to England and gave to my English friends, who admired them beyond any pictures they ever saw before. Truly Yours, P.T. Barnum. At the top, possibly in Barnum's hand, are pencil notations regarding pricing for stationery with Barnum's photograph on it, with date 8/6/81 below. It is a rather attractive likeness. One can see why Barnum was seeking its source. Condition:Expected folds, one circular dampstain lower right, else VG+.
