Strahan, 1801. 2 volumes, 4° (262 x 205mm). 1p. publisher's advertisement at back of vol.I. 1 folding hand-tinted aquatint view, 9 folding engraved maps and charts, 2 hand-coloured, extra-illustrated with the folding engraved map hand-coloured in outline, from the second edition of 1806. (Lacking half-titles, text leaves B1-F4, Q1-R4 and a 1 folding chart in vol.II spotted, text leaves 3D1-3H2 in vol.I browned, small tears to outer blank margin of the first hand-coloured map in vol.II.) Contemporary speckled calf, spines gilt with green morocco lettering-pieces (spines rubbed, joints split). Provenance : George Hay Dawkins Pennant (of Penrhyn Castle, d.1840, armorial bookplate). FIRST EDITION. Barrow 'accompanied an expedition from Cape Town to Graaff-Reinet, and another to Namaqualand, and he gives an excellent description of the country traversed, particularly with regard to the botany and zoology of those regions' (Mendelssohn).
