Superb view of San Francisco Bay from San Francisco, by a German artist of note, apparently looking northeast with Angel Island at the left and Tiburon behind, the East Bay hills visible in the distance. Eduard Hildebrandt (1818-1868), trained in the formal German school but enlivened by several years in the ateliers of Paris, is best known for his watercolors of landscape scenes made during his extensive travels. He went around the world in 1864-65, during which journey the present work was undoubtedly painted. Condition: Some even dust soiling, a few tiny spots near lower edge; very good.
