Printed in Latin and Greek. 32 woodcut illustrations (14 full-page), historiated initials, woodcut printer's device on title and last leaf. Contemporary dark brown morocco gilt, author's name lettered on front cover and owner's intials "F.T." [probably Francisco Torres] on back cover within gilt circle, surrounded by a circle of a floral tool, two frames of blind and gilt fillets, the corners accentuated buy a corkscrew-like hand tool, edges gilt (rebacked, old spine laid down, ties missing). Provenance : Francisco Torres (initials "F.T." on lower cover); Albert Ehrman, Broxbourne Library (bookplate); acquired from Bernard Quaritch, 1969. FIRST EDITION. The work includes woodcuts of Greek and Roman vessels which were taken from marbles and monuments, including Trajan's column, and Roman costumes, and vases. They are most likely from Tory's workshop by Jacquemin Woeiriot The work by Antony Thylesius, reprinted by Goethe in his Farbenlehre , is the first published treatise on color.
