Beaulieu Vineyards, Georges de Latour, Cabernet Sauvignon--Vintage 2001
1 impériale per lot
BEAULIEU VINEYARDS In May, 1900, Georges de Latour purchased a four-acre vineyard in the town of Rutherford as a gift to his wide, Fernande. "Quel Beaulieu!" literally "What a Beautiful Place!" she exclaimed upon seeing the marvelous fields, and soon thereafter Beaulieu Vineyards was born. The winery grew and grew and finally. Not long after prohibition, Georges de Latour hired winemaker Russian-born Andre Tchelistcheff to instill the French winemaking practices he had learned as an oenology student in Bordeaux. Tchelistcheff quickly became the most influential winemaker in California, serving as a mentor to legendary Mike Grgich, Joe Heitz, Robert Mondavi and others. Nowadays, winemaker Joel Aiken (who trained under Tchelistcheff) continues to honor BV's original owner with the Beaulieu Vineyards Private Reserve Georges de Latour, now in its 7th decade of production. Beaulieu Vineyards, Georges de Latour, Cabernet Sauvignon--Vintage 2001 Napa Valley "BV's flagship offering, the 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon Georges de Latour Private Reserve reveals a saturated ruby/purple color along with an intriguing perfume of black currants, lead pencil shavings, loamy soil, and wood. Medium to full-bodied, ripe, and elegant, this Bordeaux-styled Cabernet finishes a bit short. The aromatics suggest a 90-point wine, and the flavors and finish something in the upper eighties. While it will not rank alongside any of the great BV Private Reserves from the fifties, sixties, seventies, or early eighties, it is a positive development for this historic estate. Anticipated maturity: now-2015." Robert Parker Wine Advocate #157 (Feb 2005) 1 impériale per lot
