London: Reeve, Benham, and Reeve, 1848. 2 volumes, 8° (243 x 155mm). 3 folding engraved maps in pocket, 2 further maps, 10 coloured lithographic plates and 20 etched plates. Original blind-stamped brown cloth gilt, upper covers gilt-illustrated, mostly unopened, (somewhat faded, spines relaid, with original endpapers). FINE SET OF THE FIRST EDITION. Britain's treaty with China in 1842 allowing her access only to ports south of Canton led to this Admiralty surveying voyage which covered Singapore, Borneo, Hong Kong, Macao, the Philippines, Celebes, Moluccas, Formosa and the Ryukyus, Japan and Korea's Quelpart Island, all finely illustrated.
