BELL, Charles. Surgical Observations, being a Quarterly Report of Cases in Surgery... London: Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme and Brown, 1816-1818. 2 volumes in one, 8 o (213 x 128 mm). 20 engraved plates (a few captions of plates trimmed, minor offsetting from plates). Contemporary marbled boards (rebacked in calf). Provenance : Bath Medical Library (ink stamp on verso of title and last leaf). FIRST EDITION. Reports of surgical cases treated by Charles Bell at the Middlesex Hospital, the Cancer Establishment, John Hunter's Old Windmill Street School of Anatomy, and in private practice. Bell, best known for his landmark researches on the physiology of the nervous system, was also a practicing surgeon and author of several surgical works, which "are worth reading as the productions of close observation and considerable experience" (DSB). In his Surgical Observations , Bell regards the cases from an anatomical and operative viewpoint, mentioning only briefly the use of medicative substances. Wellcome II, p. 136 (vol. I only).
