Oblong 8 o (96 x 158 mm.). 187 woodcut illustrations, partly hand-colored (running title trimmed in a few places, some light staining). 19th-century mottled calf gilt (chipping and wear to spine). FIRST EDITION of Belon's work on fish, molluscs and aquatic mammals. Its appearance constituted the greatest single advance in the scientific study and classification of fish since Aristotle. This work, together with those of Belon's contemporaries Rondolet and Salviani, remained standard texts for the study of fish well into the 17th century.
