BENGAL, NAGA HILL STATES, SIMLA, AND COLONIAL LIFE"The Hutwa Marriage, 1908", presentation leaf from the Maharani of Hutwa to "Mr and Mrs Greer", 8 page of text, 38 platinum prints by Johnson & Hoffmann of Calcutta (of which 4 full-page 278 x 182mm.; others mounted 2 per page, 114 x 153mm.), mounted recto only, all with printed captions, original red morocco gilt (with photographer's label inside upper cover), gilt lettered with title and Hutwa arms on upper cover, folio (355 x 265mm.), [1908]; and an archive of photo albums and loose photographs (albumen and gelatin silver, together approximately 130 images), and ephemera (a watercolour of mountain jungle, certificates of the Grand Masonic Lodge of Bengal, etc.), etc. relating to Robin Townsend Greer, Inspector General of Police in Bengal, and Colonial life in Bengal, Naga Hill States, and Simla, various sizes, c.1890-1911; and further material relating to Greer, and his children in England (quantity)FootnotesAn archive of mostly photographic materials, some by professional photographers (Bourne and Shepherd, H.Hands of Jubbulpore, etc.) and others from private cameras, of the life of an important member of the Indian Civil Service. Includes images of Naga Hill State inhabitants, a Chinese delegation, a ceremony of King George with Queen Mary, street scenes, views of Simla (including a pair showing a vista before and during an elaborate military pageant), a good album of the marriage of the Maharani of Hutwa, and many of Colonial groups, especially amateur dramatics. These include a seemingly previously unknown image of Robert Baden-Powell (founder of the Boy Scout movement, "Hero" of Mafeking) in Japanese dress playing the part of Wun Hi, alongside Mrs Wheler and Miss Turner, in a performance of the musical comedy "The Geisha" put on by the Amateur Dramatic Club of Simla, 1894. Provenance: Richard Townsend Greer (1854-1942), and family. During a distinguished career the Indian Civil Service, Greer was Chairman of the Corporation of Calcutta, a Member of the Council of the Lieutenant-Governor of Bengal for making Laws and Regulations, Inspector General of Police in Bengal (from 1899), was made a Companion of the Order of the Star of India in 1904, and, in 1908 was promoted to the Board of Revenue for Bengal.
