Beschreibung:

BENTIVOGLIO, Cardinal Guido] & Vitale MASCARDI. Festa fatta in Roma alli 25 di Febraio MDCXXXIV. Rome: [1635]. 4° (236 x 172mm.). Engraved title and 12 plates by F. Collignon after Andrea Scacchi, 11 double-page, 1 folding (tear to fold). Contemporary limp vellum gilt, covers with double fillet border, floral cornerpieces and central lozenge (recased, lower outer corners of covers reinforced). Provenance : Ivar Lessing (bookplate); Franklin H. Kissner (sale Christie's 3 October 1990 sold #3000). A FINE COPY OF THIS RARE WORK. The fête took place under the auspices of Cardinal Antonio Barberini in honour of Prince Alexander Charles son of Sigismond III, King of Poland. However, the prince was not present as he had had to leave Rome earlier than planned. The text was written by Bentivoglio, and in Olschki's opinion the plates are the "plus belles qu'ait produit le XVIIe siecle". The large folding plate gives a birds'-eye-view of the 'tournament' in progress in the Piazza Navona. Cicognara 1440; Lipperheide Sm 4; Olschki 16933; Vinet 771.
