Benyowsky (Maurice Auguste, comte de). [Memoirs and Travels of Mauritius Augustus Count de Benyowsky... Consisting of His Military Operations in Poland, his Exile into Kamchatka, his Escape and Voyage from that Peninsula through the Northern Pacific Ocean, Touching at Japan and Formosa, To Canton in China, 2 volumes, 1st edition, for G. G. J. and J. Robinson 1790], both volumes lacking title-pages (provided in loosely inserted photocopy facsimiles), half-title to volume 1, 23 engraved plates, maps & plans (many folding), few plates close trimmed and some dust-soiling to folds, leaf K4 (pages 71/72) lacking in volume 1 (provided in loosely inserted photocopy facsimile), ink stamp to final leaf of text in each volume, occasional spotting, modern half sheep gilt, 4to (Qty: 2) Cordier Sinica 277; Cordier Japonica 454. Benyowsky was exiled to Siberia by the Russians, and led seventy prisoners on an escape mission out of Kamchatka, sailing to Japan, Formosa, and China. His memoir provides accounts of Siberia, the Russian fur trade, and the customs of Kamchatka. The escape party also allegedly reached the Alaskan mainland.
