Worcester, Massachusetts: Isaiah Thomas, 1794. 16 o , (100 x 66mm). Collation: [A] 8 B-F 8 . 48 leaves (blank recto A1 pasted to wrapper, some leaves dog-eared and slightly frayed at margins, a small hole to E6 affecting one letter text, a few leaves slightly torn at lower gutter from rough handling, lower outer corners of last 10 leaves slightly chewed). Contemporary decorated paper wrappers (block-printed wallpaper?) sewn with black thread along spine (wrappers quite rubbed). Full-page woodcut frontispiece (a country house with outbuildings in a rural landscape (72 x 50mm.), 11 circular woodcut text illustrations set within square frames (each 50 x 50mm. approximately). FIRST AMERICAN EDITION, ONE OF ONLY TWO RECORDED COPIES (the other, at the American Antiquarian Society in Worcester, has suffered damage to its frontispiece and title, but the titlepage is present, contrary to what Bristol states). The work was subsequently reprinted by Babcock at Hartford in 1796 (Evans 30831) and again in 1798 (Evans 48368). Bristol 8594; D'Alte Welch 90.1 (citing only the AAS copy); Evans 46981. Provenance : Childish signature of "S.J.B.Norton" on front wrapper and p.53 margin; signature of "Thomas Blacke Norton Abington 1830" on lower margin of frontispiece.
