Beschreibung des gantzen Welt-Kreises. Frankfurt: Johann David Zunners, 1684-1685. 5 volumes in 2. 4to (217 x 163 mm). Additional engraved titles for each volume and 114 plates in 1st volume; 122 plates in the 2nd volume; 98 plates in 3rd volume; 128 plates in 4th volume, 2 of which are folding; 5th volume with 83 plates in first section, 3 of which are folding, and 54 plates in the second section. Early vellum, titles penned to spine. Some worming to preliminary and final leaves only briefly affecting text, some dampstain in gutter of preliminary and final leaves of 2nd bound volume, several leaves with tears and a few repairs, plates generally clean, shelfwear to bindings. Provenance: Dr. Otto Leopold Schmidt, Illinois State Historical Society President (bookplate) German edition of French cartographer and engineer Allain Mallet's ambitious, well-illustrated description of the known world. Includes much on astronomy with star maps and illustrations of the tools of an astronomer, as well as maps, views and figures of many parts of the world including 54 plates of America in the final volume.
