[Naples: Joseph ben Jacob Ashkenazi Gunzenhauser, between 28 March and 26 September 1487]. Chancery 2 o (256 x 190 mm). Collation: 1-10 8 11 1 0 12 8 13 6 (1/1r: introduction by Immanuel ben Solomon; 1/1v, line 12: beginning of the Biblical text, the initial word within a decorative woodcut white-vine border [42 x 130 mm.]; 1/1v, col. 2, line 13: beginning of the commentary; 13/6r, line 38: colophon by the editor (proofreader? typesetter?); 13/6v: blank). 104 leaves. No foliation, no catchwords. Signed to the fold. In a number of quires (3rd, 5th, 6th, 11th and 12th) some signatures are printed on the verso of a conjugate leaf in the second half of the quire. Headlines somewhat irregularly used on recto and verso pages. Double column, the commentary continuing under the column of text. 36-45 lines (varying); a page of 45 lines, with headline, measures 202 (212) x 133 mm; a page of 36 lines, with headline and signature, 161 (171, 175) x 133 mm. Types: 1:185 H. (square), unvocalized, for the initial word of Proverbs only; 2:120 H. (square), vocalized for the text, unvocalized for the running titles and keywords in the commentary; 3:90 H. (semi-cursive) for the commentary and the signatures. Line fillers. Paper: various stocks with hand-with-flower watermarks. (Conjugate leaves 6/4.5 bound in reverse order, a few marginal tears and old repairs in the first quire, some light marginal dampstaining.) Modern blind and gold-tooled dark red morocco. PROVENANCE: Manuscript title page in unskilled square Hebrew lettering on first flyleaf. Chapter numbering added by hand in square Hebrew numerals. Owner's note and correction on leaf 1/1r. Moses Halfoune (inkstamps). New York, JTS Mic. 3867, the tale of the martyr Rafael Levi in Metz, was copied by an Anshel ben Moses Isaac Halfoune. This manuscript was copied in 1750 and Moses was zts"l. Another copy of the same work, New York, JTS Mic. 1546, also bears the Moses Halfoune stamp. The Halfounes were a family from Metz; they are cited twice in articles on the Jews of Metz in REJ 7, p. 115, and REJ 50, p. 121 (spelled there Halfoune). In a Pinkas Chevra Kadisha of Metz, New York, JTS Mic. 5396, Moses ben G. Halfoune is stated to have died on 25 Adar 5506, and was laid to rest near the grave of his wife Reichle who died the previous Shavuot. A Gimple Halfoune died in Tevet 5506 (= 1746), but it is not clear whether he is the G. who was Moses' father.
