BIBLE, Latin . Textus Biblie. Lyons: (Jean Crespin), 1529. Folio, 358 x 257 mm. (13 7/8 x 10 in.), contemporary pigskin over wooden boards, roll-tooled in blind to a panel design, very worn, loss to leather on upper cover, original index tabs, lacking clasps, lower margins and fore-corner of first few leaves wormed and frayed with loss to woodcut title border, title-page rubbed and soiled, a few short marginal tears, minor worming to lower inner margins, mostly marginal dampstaining, a few small inkstains, slight discoloration throughout, lacking final blank leaf . Title printed in red and black with small woodcut of St. Jerome (repeated 3 times in text) within four-part woodcut border showing the six days of the Creation, God the Father, and the Last Supper, text in double column within rule borders, bâtarde type, canon tables in red and black, large 6-part creation woodcut at beginning of Genesis, half-page cut of King Solomon at beginning of Proverbs, 3/4-page Nativity cut at beginning of New Testament, and 121 small text woodcuts within ornamental strip borders (including 23 repeats), woodcut initials. Fairfax Murray French 36; Harvard/Mortimer Italian 66. Second Crespin edition, reprinted from the 1527 edition. The illustrations follow the schema of the Sacon editions printed in Lyons in 1518 and 1521; the blocks being close copies of those used in Jacques and Jean Mareschal's Bibles of 1523-1541, as is the disposition of the text within ruled columns. Provenance : Inscription on lower pastedown, dated 1534; contemporary inscription on D4r, under Nativity cut -- "B.V. Maria, in Fürstenfeld," 18th or 19th-century inscription on title.
