BIBLE, New Testament, Dutch. Het Nieuwe Testament, ofte alle Boecken des Nieuwen Verbondts onses Heeren Jesu Christi. Gedruckt door last van zyn Czaarse Majesteyt Petrus den Eersten, Keyser can Groot en Kleyn Russlandt . The Hague: Johannes van Duren, 1717. Two volumes in one, 2 o (407 x 252 mm). (Some pale spotting.) Contemporary speckled calf, spine gilt, morocco lettering piece (rubbed and somewhat chipped). Provenance : J.L.B. (booklabel); purchased from Emil Offenbacher, 20 September 1957. "In 1717 an edition of the N.T. (States-General version), printed entirely in capitals, appeared at the Hague, f o, 2 vols.; and a corresponding edition of the O.T. was printed at Amsterdam, 1721, f o, 4 vols. These editions, which were prepared by command of the Tsar Peter the Great, gave the Dutch text in one column of the page, the other being left blank. The intention was to add a Slavonic text in the other column, when the sheets reached St. Petersburg. This was actually done in some copies of the N.T. [though not in the present copy], but eventually most of the diglot copies were destroyed" (Darlow & Moule). This edition is very rare, with only an incomplete copy of the complete set appearing in American Book Prices Current in the last 30 years: Sotheby's Geneva, 30 November 1975. Darlow & Moule II,i: p.316 note.
