Italic and Roman types, arabesque ornament on title. Royal privilege, Epistre dated Geneva, 10 June 1543, and the La formes des Prières ). Pages within elaborate, decorative woodcut borders. The psalm settings in woodcut musical notation on a five-line staff, employing the diamond-shaped notes in general use in this period. Arabesque tail-pieces and initial capitals in four sizes. (Lacks last leaf q8 with printer's device, small spot on title-page, marginal rust spot at D7). Nineteenth-century dark olive morocco, covers ruled in gilt, spine in six compartments, gilt-lettered in two, edges gilt. Provenance : Henry-Auguste-Brölemann (engraved bookplate); Madame Etienne Mallet, grand-daughter of the previous (sale, Sotheby's, London. 5 May 1926, lot 154); Federico Gentili di Giuseppe (booklabel of his grand-daughter Mrs. A.R. Salem); acquired from Bernard Quaritch, 1966. DE TOURNES'S HUGUENOT PSALTER WITH VERSE TRANSLATIONS BY MAROT AND MUSICAL SETTINGS. A beautifully executed edition, employing a wide collection of finely detailed borders (arabesques, architecture, grotesques), containing Marot's translations of the psalms, and with monophonic musical settings by Claude Goudimel (ca 1520-1572), one of the most important French composers of the sixteenth century. He converted to Protestantism in 1557 and was among those killed in the St. Bartholomew's Day massacre in 1572. Cartier 498; Mortimer French 91
