BINDING - ROYAL HEADS BINDER (fl. 1661-1665)] [CHARLES I, King of England (1600-1649)]. \KBasilika\k. The Workes of King Charles The Martyr: With a Collection of Declarations, Treaties, and other Papers concerning the Differences betwixt His Said Majesty and his Two Houses of Parliament. London: James Flesher for R. Royston, 1662. 2 volumes, 2 o (361 x 230 mm). Engraved frontispiece, title-page, vignette title-page, three double-page plates, and initials, margins neatly ruled in red throughout, one leaf printed in red and black (lacking the first blank in volume one, a few small marginal tears not affecting the text, one or two small rust holes). Binding: Contemporary red turkey by the Royal Heads Binder, gilt border of double fillet, enclosing a panel of single and double fillets, and flower in a circle roll, the center of each side of the panel decorated on the outside edge with strawberry and flower volutes, acorn, scroll, flower and dot tools, and at the corners with an elaborate scroll tool, in the center a fine large gilt block of the Royal Arms with supporters and motto, the spine in seven panels with six raised bands, black goatskin gilt-lettered label in one, the others elaborately tooled with repeating gilt strawberry and flower volutes, board edges with gilt flower in a circle roll, all edges gilt (small early repairs to the turkey on the front covers, not affecting the gilt-work, unevenly darkened, very minor scuffing to the extremities); green board folding boxes, with morocco gilt labels (worn). Provenance : Charles II, King of England (1630-1685, binding); '[obliterated] her booke' (signature); Tho: Boudler (gift to) Will: McGuire (inscription); John Wesley Warrington (bookplate). An elegant binding by the elusive "Royal Heads Binder", named after the profile portrait tools of Charles II and Catherine of Braganza which were used on a distinct group of bindings from the Royal Chapel. "Bindings, with the same tools but without the heads, are found on a dozen more books -- some of them with a fine block of the royal arms -- which include a copy of the works of Charles I in the Royal Library at Windsor" (Nixon), and the present copy. Maggs Catalogue 1212 , p. 74; English Restoration Bookbindings 54, p. 30 and Five Centuries of English Bookbinding 36, p. 86; STC C2075.
