BLAEU, Willem (1571-1638) and Johannes BLAEU (1596-1673). Theatrum orbis terrarum, sive Atlas novus. Pars tertia [Volume III. Italy, Greece and the British Isles]. Amsterdam: Johannes and Cornelius Blaeu, 1640.
BLAEU, Willem (1571-1638) and Johannes BLAEU (1596-1673). Theatrum orbis terrarum, sive Atlas novus. Pars tertia [Volume III. Italy, Greece and the British Isles]. Amsterdam: Johannes and Cornelius Blaeu, 1640. Volume III only, 2° (500 x 335mm). Text in Latin, mounted on guards throughout. Engraved architectural title with letterpress overslip and 66 engraved maps, of which 63 double-page, one single page and 2 in the text, all finely coloured by a contemporary hand. (Tiny marginal hole to title, light browning and spotting with occasional light staining, heavier to a few gatherings, small marginal worming to gatherings M-R and 3S3 to end, a few very short marginal tears with associated old repairs, old ink pen trial to blank verso of map 28.) Contemporary vellum panelled in gilt, gilt edges (extremities rubbed, two tiny splits to upper joint, very short split to backstrip and fore-edge of lower cover, lightly soiled, lacking ties). Provenance : early ink ownership inscription dated 16 May 1774 to title. FIRST EDITION WITH FINE CONTEMPORARY HAND-COLOURING, the original Latin edition containing 58 maps of Italy, 4 of Greece and 4 of the British Isles. Without the Appendix of 24 maps sometimes found in other variant issues. Van der Krogt 2:201.3C.
