BLOME, Richard (d. 1705). The Gentlemans Recreation. ... An Encyclopedy of the Arts and Sciences ... [and] Horsemanship, Hawking, Hunting, Fowling, Fishing and Agriculture. With a Short Treatise of Cock-Fighting . London: S. Roycroft for R. Blome, 1686. 2 parts in one, 2° (402 x 254mm). Title printed in red and black, additional engraved title, 10 plates of suscribers' arms, 30 plates on the arts and sciences, 45 plates mostly on hunting and hawking, woodcut text illustrations, with the initial privilege leaf. (Tiny paper flaws in engraved title, very occasional light spot.) 18th-century russia panelled in blind, marbled edges (rebacked preserving original backstrip, light wear at extremities). Provenance : George Watson Neish (probably 1849-1931; label) -- Earl of Aylesford (sale Christie's, 6 March 1888, lot 203, £6 to Walford) -- Kurt Lindner (Biblotheca Tiliana bookplate, small stamp at beginning and end). FIRST EDITION of one of the great 17th-century sporting titles. It covers all subjects of interest and use to a gentleman, beginning with summaries of logic, natural philosophy, astronomy, navigation, warfare, drawing and painting and handling in considerable detail horsemanship, hawking, hunting, and agriculture. Many of its plates are dedicated to a member of the nobility or gentry, some of whom lent their knowledge and expertise to the work. Schwerdt remarked that perfect copies are so rare that he had seen only two out of about dozen. Harting 41; Schwerdt I, pp. 72-73 'contains an enormous store of information'; Westwood & Satchell p.35l; Wing G-3213.
