BLONDEL, Jacques-François (1705-1774). De la distribution des maisons de plaisance, et de la decoration des edifices en general . Paris: Charles-Antione Jombert, 1737-1738. 2 volumes, 4 o (285 x 212 mm). Title-pages printed in red and black. Engraved frontispiece and 44 engraved plates in vol. 1 (42 folding), 111 engraved plates in vol. 2 (12 folding), numerous engraved head- and tail-pieces and initials in text. (Lacking half-titles.) Contemporary French cat's paw calf, spines gilt, edges stained red (some minor rubbing, a few small chips at spine ends, small repair on back cover of vol. 2). Provenance : armorial bookplate on front pastedowns. FIRST EDITION, second issue (without the errata and with Jombert's address as "Rue Dauphine") of Blondel's first published work. Blondel, who was one of the most significant French architectural educators of the 18th century, intended to establish a domestic architectural style conforming to the classical principles used on civic buildings, but adapted to suit private homes. Vol. I includes many architectural designs for houses and vol. II describes both interior and exterior ornaments, as well as garden plans. Berlin Kat. 2400; Fowler 49. (2)
