BOCCACCIO, GIOVANNI. De claris mulieribus. Bern: Mathias Apiarius (1539). Folio, 286 x 193 mm. (11 1/4 x 7 5/8 in.), janséniste brown crushed levant morocco, title gilt-lettered on spine, board edges gilt-ruled, inside dentelles, edges marbled and gilt, by CHAMBOLLE-DURU, a few small nicks to covers, extremities scuffed, lacking conjugate leaf L1-6, supplied in photographic facsimile, discreet marginal repairs to title catching 2 letters on verso, repairs to fols. N3 and N4, affecting approximately 20 letters and corner of woodcut on N3v (all affected areas supplied in facsimile), a few other minor marginal repairs, washed and pressed . Dedication and Latin verses at the head of each chapter by J. Telerus, roman type, printer's woodcut devices on title and on verso of final leaf, 15 large woodcuts in the text, including two repeats, the first cut dated 1537, 8 signed with the monogram "IK" with a dagger, tentatively ascribed by Nagler (III, 2669) to Jakob Kerver or Jakob Köbel. Apparently the only recorded edition illustrated with these woodcuts. "Passavent, Peintre-Graveur IV, 305...says that the remarkable cut of Pope Joan [on N3v] appears to have been first published on a broadside, entitled 'Von hurebobst'"--Fairfax-Murray German 78; Adams B-2141; BM/STC German , p. 129; Brunet I, 990; VD 16, B5814. Provenance : (from Lardanchet, 1935, 39/15).
