Strassburg: Wendel Rihel, 1552. 4to, 229 x 169mm, contemporary panelled pigskin over bevelled wooden boards, blindstamped with heads-in-medallion (Reformers) and other rolls, leather label in second spine compartment, one (of 2) brass fore-edge clasps, somewhat worn, head of spine repaired with vellum, leaves lightly browned, tiny amount of marginal worming, occasional staining, one clean tear, last leaf torn and detached. FIRST LATIN EDITION, AND THE MOST FULLY ILLUSTRATED. Ornamental initials, printer's device at end, woodcut author portrait by David Kandel, 568 woodcuts of plants by Kandel, 2 additional, colored, figures pasted onto one woodcut. Hunt 66; Nissen BBI 183; Stafleu & Cowan 576. This second illustrated edition contained almost 100 more woodcuts than the 1546 edition, including a fine portrait of Bock. It also contained for the first time material by Tessier and Gessner, including the first botanical bibliography. Provenance : a few early marginal annotations, earlier inscriptions or notes washed from first and last leaves -- Strassburg, Faculty of Medicine, stamp on title -- Kenneth K. Mackenzie; Horticultural Society of New York, bookplate.
