Contemporary French calf, probably Lyonnese, gilt fillet borders enclosing panel of strapwork design blocked on both covers painted in various colors, around a central oval emblem depicting a mountain and a tree, gilt and gauffered edges (skilfully rebacked, and corners repaired); cloth folding case. Provenance : Lucius Wilmerding (bookplate, sale 6 March 1951, part II, lot 405). A mid-16th-century French painted strapwork binding, often found on books printed in Lyons and therefore commonly attributed to Lyonese binders.
