BOETHIUS, Anicius Manlius Torquatus Severinus (480?-524?). Dialectica Aristotelis. Lyons: Sebastian Gryphius, 1551. 8 o (168 x 110 mm). Woodcut printer's device on title and last page. Contemporary French calf, probably Lyonnese, gilt fillet borders enclosing panel of strapwork design blocked on both covers painted in various colors, around a central oval emblem depicting a mountain and a tree, gilt and gauffered edges (skilfully rebacked, and corners repaired); cloth folding case. Provenance : Lucius Wilmerding (bookplate, sale 6 March 1951, part II, lot 405). A mid-16th-century French painted strapwork binding, often found on books printed in Lyons and therefore commonly attributed to Lyonese binders.
