Liber sextus Decretalium. Venice: Bernardinus Stagninus de Tridino, 24 December 1490. [Bound with:] CLEMENS V, Pope (formerly Raimundus Bertrandi del Goth, 1305-1314). Constitutiones. Venice: Bernardinus Stagninus de Tridino, 23 March 1491. Two legal works printed by Bernardinus Stagninus. The second work here, also known as the Clementines, comprises the decretals forming the final part of the Corpus Juris Canonici (and including the important bulla on the poverty of the Franciscans). H 3616*, HR 5445; BSB-Ink B-726; GW 4886, 7117; IGI 1982; Goff B-1004, C739; ISTC ib01004000, ic00739000. Super-royal folio (424 x 289mm). First work: 112 leaves; second work: 49 leaves (of 50, without final blank). Both works printed in red and black. Red and blue Lombard initials, each work with woodcut printer’s device printed in red (some toning and spotting, a few stains). 19th-century half russia over marbled boards, edges marbled, remains of later manuscript pastedown (spine perished). Provenance: George Dunn (1865-1912, English bibliophile and palaeographer; armorial bookplate, his sale, Sotheby’s, 1917, lot 1950) – Albert May Todd (1850-1931, American chemist and businessman known as the “Peppermint King;” his sale, Anderson Galleries, 22-24 October 1929) – Robert Walsingham Martin (1871-1961; bookplate; his sale, Parke-Bernet, 12 November 1963, lot 303) – acquired there via Lucien Goldschmidt.
