BOOK OF HOURS, in Latin, ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM. [Bruges, ca 1460
BOOK OF HOURS, in Latin, ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM. [Bruges, ca 1460] 86 x 67mm. 169 leaves, apparently COMPLETE, 15 lines written in black ink in a gothic bookhand, justification: 53 x 37mm, rubrics in pink, one-line initials alternately of blue or burnished gold with flourishing of red or black, two-line initials of burnished gold with grounds and infills of pink and blue with white decoration, FIFTEEN LARGE ILLUMINATED INITIALS AND FULL-PAGE BORDERS (slight cropping of borders, occasional rubbing, smudging and offsetting). 19th-century russia gilt (worn, boards detached). Provenance : Cornelius J. Hauck (bookplate). CONTENT: Calendar ff.1-12v; Short Hours of the Cross ff.13-19v; Short Hours of the Holy Spirit ff.20-25; Mass of the Virgin ff.26-32; Office of the Virgin, use of Rome ff.33-101: matins f.33, lauds f.52, prime f.63, terce f.68, sext f.72, none f.76, vespers f.80, compline f.88, variants for Advent f.94; Prayer to the Virgin, Obsecro te ff.102-105v; Seven Penitential Psalms ff.106-125; Office of the Dead ff.126-169; prayer added in a 15th-century hand on f.169v. Although modest in size and produced without miniatures this is a carefully and extensively decorated Book of Hours showing all the stylistic characteristics associable with products of the book trade in Bruges in the 1460s.
