Contemporary diced russia, gilt ruling, marbled endpapers, modern cloth slipcase. Condition : browning to frontispiece and offset to title; rebacked preserving most of original backstrip, corners repaired, edges worn. Provenance : Hester Maria Elphinstone (née: Hester Maria Thrale) Viscountess Keith (1764-1857) (ownership signature on title); from Pickering & Chatto, November 1983, $3500. "queeney" thrale's copy of boswell's johnson. first edition , Vol. I with S4r in second state, reading "give" in line 10, Mm4 and Nn1 are cancels; vol. II with the five cancels. (reading 'give' on p. 135, line 10 of volume I). Originally owned by Hester Maria Thrale, Mrs. Thrales youngest daughter and Johnson's "Queeney". Hester Maria Thrale was a favorite of Johnson from childhood. Johnson was a frequent guest at the family home, Streatham Park, from 1765 onwards, and in his intimacy with the family he played a considerable role in the children's education including giving them lessons in Latin.
