BREVIARY, Use of Rome. Breuiarium s[ecundu]m Romanum vsum , Venice: Jacobus Pentius de Leucho for Paganinus de Paganinis, 19 May 1515. 8° (148 x 95mm). Printed in red and black throughout, large woodcut on title and 6 full-page illustrations in the text, numerous small woodcuts including repeats, 12 calendar illustrations, 10 half-page woodcut borders. (Lacks the last 88 leaves, never bound in, first gathering defective at the margins affecting most borders, a few leaves lightly stained). Contemporary South German or Swiss blindstamped calf over wooden boards, central lozenge on sides formed by ruled lines and enclosing several small rosette tools, larger rosettes at the corners, the whole within a border of wheel-shaped flowers, metal clasps. (Rather worn, piece missing from foot of spine). Provenance : Fr. Melchior Felsler, 1563 (ownership inscription on front free endpaper and some notes in his hand on the front pastedown). An extremely rare breviary and a close reprint of Pentius' edition of 1511. It is interesting to note that Essling's copy of that edition also lacked the last 88 leaves. There is certainly no evidence of them ever having been bound into this copy and it is possible that they were never printed. Not in Censimento, Sander/Rava, Bohatta, BMC or Adams.
