Brian Kneale MBE (b.1930) Untitled II, 2018 acrylics on canvas 54 x 75 cm £5,000-6,000 Bryan Kneale is a Manx painter, sculptor and teacher whose restless spirit of inquiry has led him from oil painting and portraiture to welding and forging large metal sculptures imbued with a drawn poise. In turn, he uses acrylic paint to communicate almost as if it were steel, shaping forms to create sculptural paintings. In 1984, he was the first abstract sculptor to be elected to the Royal Academy and was instrumental in mounting important sculpture exhibitions in London and abroad. His career as a teacher began at the Royal College of Art in 1952, becoming Head of Sculpture in 1985 and Professor of Drawing in 1990. He was also Professor of Sculpture at the Royal Academy Schools from 1980 to 1987. Kneale was elected Royal Academician in 1974. He lives and works in London. Kneale has exhibited widely both in Britain and internationally and his work is represented in collections including Tate; the British Museum; the Natural History Museum, London; the Arts Council of Great Britain; the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; National Gallery of Victoria, Australia; Museum of Modern Art, São Paolo, Brazil and the National Gallery of New Zealand. Bryan Kneale is the younger brother of Nigel Kneale, creator of the 1953 science fiction BBC TV classic, The Quatermass Experiment. Bryan Kneale illustrated the covers for the Penguin editions of the Quatermass scripts and his painting of a lobster was the inspiration for the Martian creatures in Quatermass and the Quatermass and the Pit.
