Illustrated throughout with vignettes and full-page plates. Publisher's original sheep, original upper wrappers bound in, upper sides blocked with an all-over design in gilt and black, lower sides blocked in blind, gilt edges, yellow moiré-style endpapers (extremities rubbed, endpapers with small chips near edges and starting near the gutter, wrapper of part I chipped). Provenance : Sergei Nikolaevich Shubinskii (printed limitation) -- 'Printed in Russia' (small stamp on front endpapers). FIRST EDITION, IN THE PUBLISHER'S ORIGINAL BINDING, AND PRINTED FOR NOTED HISTORIAN SERGEI SHUBINSKII. An important association copy: Shubinskii was responsible for those sections in Istoriia which relate to the literature and art of Russia during Peter's reign, as Brikner acknowledges in his preface (see p. III). 'A luxurious, lavishly illustrated edition... the book is popular and well known by lovers of history and bibliophiles.
