Gothic and roman types, woodcut vignette of a fully-rigged vessel on titlepage, folding map of the Brazilian coast (lacks two engraved views of Pernambuco, erasure to blank portion of title, a few tiny wormtracks in gutter margins of several leaves, mended with archival paper, map shaved to plate-mark at top edge). Modern quarter red morocco and paper boards. Very rare (no copy recorded in ABPC since at least 1975). An important first-hand account of the late stages of the prolonged military and naval struggles between the Netherlands and Portugal over the enormous territory of present-day Brazil. The text comprises Van de Broeck's journal from June 1645 and August 1646. The warfare reached a peak in the 1640s, but the Dutch ultimately relinquished all claims by treaty in 1654. Alden and Landis 651/29; Borba de Moraes I:129; JCB II: 406; Sabin 8184.
