ÉDITION ORIGINALE, très rare. “New Holland was still in its infancy when a number of Dutch ships set off in 1642 on an expedition to conquer Chile. In the years leading up to the foundation of the West India Company there had been much talk about colonizing the elongated Spanish province, which could serve as a base of operations from the west against coastal Peru and New Spain… The expeditionary naval force sailed from the Netherlands first to Brazil, where it was reinforced with several ships, and the whole float left Recife in January, 1643. In charge of the expedition was Hendrick Brouwer (1581-1643), a former governor-general of the Dutch East Indies.” À leur arrivée au Chili, les membres de l’expédition établirent un contact avec les Indiens Araucans ou Mapuches avec lesquels ils partageaient un même et unique ennemi, l’Espagne… Ils établirent une base à Valdivia. N’étant pas parvenus à nouer avec les Indiens une alliance, pourtant primordiale à tout succès, très vite, ils manquèrent d’approvisionnements… La mission se transforma alors en un échec, auquel Brouwer ne survécut pas. Les Hollandais quittèrent le Chili en 1644. La première description hollandaise de l’île de Yezo (actuelle Hokkaïdo) dressée par le navigateur Maerten Gerutz de Vries figure à la page 95. 3 grandes planches dépliantes gravées, dont 2 cartes figurant le golfe d’Ankaos et Valdivia. Petite restauration à la page de titre. La carte du golfe d’Ankaos est un peu courte en tête. Dimensions : 187 x 138 mm.
