BROWN, Isaac Hawkins (1705-1760)] A Pipe of Tobacco: in Imitation of Six Several Authors, London: L. Gilliver, 1736. 8° (190 x 110mm.). Half title, woodcut device on title, elaborate headpieces, initials and decorations. (Some very light marginal browning, a few spots). 19th-century half calf gilt. (Extremities very lightly rubbed). FIRST EDITION. Foxon B520. Provenance : an anonymous note dated 1753 on the half title reads, "The Author of this excellent burlesque Piece, the ingenious Hawkins Brown, Esqr, now a Member of Parliament, has burlesqued the following eminent Authors, by such a close imitation of their Turn of Verse, that it has not the Appearance of a Copy, but an Original ... Swift, Pope, Thomson, Young, Phillips, Cibber ..." With Henry Carey's Poems on Several Occasions (London, 1729, lacking frontispiece), R. Dodsley's Trifles ([London], 1745, 2 vols.) and Henry Jones's Poems on Several Occasions (London, 1749). (5)
