Appleton and Company, 1872-1874. 2 volumes, 4 o (317 x 244 mm). 49 steel-engraved plates, including frontispieces and engraved titles, and numerous wood cut illustrations in text. (Some scattered spotting, browning to extremities, dampstaining to top and bottom of some leaves in volume one, upper hinge split in volume one, a few pages loose or detached.) Contemporary half morocco, edges gilt (some rubbing and scuffing). Provenance : Laura Hallet (inscription in ink on endpaper, signed, "From Mother"). FIRST EDITION. The engravings in this work, depicting views of cities and towns as well as nature are, "from drawings made on the spot, by artists sent by the publishers for the purpose" (Introduction). (2)
