Half-title. 2 folding maps (one map detached, a fews tears along folds, map of "Hygeia" with tape repair on verso). (Half-title and front free endpaper detached.) Original cloth-backed boards, printed paper label on front cover, uncut (covers detached, spine mostly perished ). Provenance : early ownership signature on front cover; Thomas W. Streeter (bookplate; his sale part III, Parke Bernet, 24 October 1967, lot 1365). FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY, inscribed by Bullock on the front free endpaper: "With W. Bullock's respects." Bullock returned from his journey to Mexico by way of the United States, landing in New Orleans and heading up the Mississippi and Ohio rivers to Cincinnati. He became so charmed with that city that he purchased an estate, Elmwood, opposite on the Kentucky shore with the intention of building a small community away from the bustle of Cincinnati. He commissioned the London architect John B. Papworth to draw a plan of his suburban retreat, included in the book, called Hygeia after the Greek goddess of health. The town was to contain cultural buildings, areas for agriculture and horticulture, houses for various classes of person, and it included a spacious house for Bullock and his family. Although Bullock's plan ultimately failed and he returned to England in 1836, his plan for Hygeia is a very early example of an American utopian project.
