BURNES, Alexander (1805-1841). Travels into Bokhara. London: A. Spottiswoode for John Murray 1834. 3 volumes, 8 (222 x 140mm). Half-titles. Engraved portrait of the author after Daniel Maclise 7 plates (3 lithographs [1 double-page], 4 engravings). (Plates browned and spotted, some light browning to text margins.) 19th-century green half morocco gilt, t.e.g. (slight scuffing to extremities, spines darkened). Provenance : John Loch (chairman of the East India Company, author's presentation copy, inscribed "John Loch Esqr with the best compliments of the author"); E. Marjoribanks (armorial bookplate). [ With :] James ARROWSMITH. Central Asia ... principally from the original M.S. surveys of Lieut. Alexr. Burnes. London: Arrowsmith, 1834. Folding engraved map, hand-coloured in outline, in segments, mounted on linen, 530 x 765mm. WITH AN EARLY MANUSCRIPT EXTENSION (watermarked 1837, 250 x 430mm.), showing in outline an area to the north of the Caspian and Ural Seas, and some manuscript notes concerning distances on the map itself. Original cloth boards, letterpress paper label on upper cover. Provenance : Military Depot. Q.M.G Department (ownership label). IMPORTANT AUTHOR'S PRESENTATION COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION, with the separately-issued map. John Loch, the recipient of the present work, besides being the chairman of the East India Company, was also the person to whom Burnes dedicated the second edition (see lot 169). The work is essentially the account of an early spy: Burnes was ostensibly an officer returning on leave via an overland route, whilst actually acting as an agent for the government. (4)
